In 1957, Althea Gibson won the Wimbledon Championships, becoming the first black athlete to do so.
Read more about Althea on the recently relaunched Today in Women’s History.
Can anyone tell me if Gibson was gay or bi? Wikipedia (that trusty source) lists two marriages, but AfterEllen has a piece on her “Breaking Boundaries” celebration. However, they often feature cool women, not just cool queer women. Hmm.
